    Katy Perry does Beyonce...sorta

Monday, December 1, 2008, 02:16 PM EST [General]

CLICKY ME to see a video of Katy Perry dancing to Beyonce's Single Ladies. She's not that good of a dancer and really can't pull this off considering she doesn't have the butt that Beyonce has.

What do you think of Katy's performance?

    The Dreaming ....

Monday, December 1, 2008, 07:00 PM GMT [Creative Writing]

In the blue light of afternoon

I think faraway thoughts in a faraway land,

As I touch the bark of an alien tree,

    A eucalypt; pitted and peeling.

    A painting-by-numbers

    In blocks of grey unsubtlety,

Strangely smooth as snakeskin to my hand.

    Under the Southern sky,

Close to the ancient pulse of earth,

    I dream my own Dreamtime,

And hear in the dessicated rustle of leaves,

It seems,  my own Ancestral spirits sigh.

Life, Love, and the Pursuit of Happiness...

Monday, December 1, 2008, 01:51 PM EST [General]

    A pondering...
    I don't know...
    My life is pretty amazing...
Sure, I've had some really rough times, some total devastation, and some really profound miracles happen.
I'm grateful for everything in my life.
    I truly am.
When I need something, it always seems to be given to me... Maybe not in the timeframe that I want, but it's shown to me again and again...
I'm pretty good with having faith in that stuff.  In being patient and letting it happen.
It's happened again and again and again.  If I'm out of money or the bills are late, there always seems to be something that comes along to help.  Usually at the last minute of course...
But I have faith in that stuff and it happens.
So... why the HELL do I have such a problem with faith and patience when it comes to wanting someone to share my life?
I truly believe that we are instilled (inflicted) with a desire to love and be loved.
I believe in a true hearts desire.
I believe in a once in a lifetime...
So where the F@%$ is it???
It's so easy for me to fall into a pity trip over this...
I could whine and cry about wanting to hold someone or be with someone or do things with someone...
I mean, ****, I do the right things, I spend my life giving to others, I live honestly, and I'm a hellofa great guy...
So it's easy to slip into the poor me's and say 'why?'
    But that solves nothing.
What it tells me is that I need more faith, more patience...
It tells me that I need to be giving more of myself...
I tell folks that I give unconditionally...  do I?  I hope so...
It's something I need to be more vigilant in...
Look... here's the thing...  Today, I'm lonely and insecure and I hate those feelings...
    Thanks for listening.

    Church goers v Muslim prayers

Monday, December 1, 2008, 06:48 PM GMT [General]

Having moved my ghostly self to Turkey for the next three or four months , I went for a long run this fine balmy evening along the coast and as I was completing the physical venture I heard the distinctive sounds of the local mosque echoing all around the hills and resplendent surroundings as I sprinted the last hundred metres or so. I saw a few Muslims leaving to travel home and I compared it with a church in England.

I looked at those people leaving tonight and thought there is one substantial difference. These people are not going to walk into an office tomorrow morning to work for NatWest bank, NPower energy , BP oil, BNP Mining, AT&T telecom  or other such industries where they can dictate orders from afar, set up call centres to deflect attention, put policies in place backed up by the government and f*** me hard with the states backing.

No , I will probably meet them in their local business's.

Baby P inquiry: send for Lord Laming. Why?

Monday, December 1, 2008, 06:43 PM GMT [General]

One very curious aspect of the fall-out from the chilling Baby P case is the role of Lord Laming. The 72 year-old former social worker was hired by Gordon Brown and Ed Balls several weeks ago to investigate Britain's social services in the wake of the death of Baby P; he will report next year. Laming also chaired the inquiry in 2003 into the death of Victoria Climbie which introduced a whole series of measures which appear to have failed Baby P. The Government then invites Laming back to investigate the consequences for social services after the latest outrage, which his Climbie review was supposed to make less likely. I am tempted to say you couldn't make this stuff up, but it gets worse.

Laming has written to Balls to say there is no need for a public inquiry on Baby P, which is probably in itself the correct judgment as all the facts are in the public domain anyway.

But Balls elaborated: "In his letter, Lord Laming also raises the question of a public inquiry into Haringey Children's Services. He says that he has been "struck by the robustness of the foundation on which current children's services are based." He sets out his view that a public inquiry into the services in Haringey would set back the progress that has been made in many places and divert effort from the actions needed now to keep children safe in Haringey. I agree with this judgment."

Laming is "struck by the robustness of the foundation on which current children's  services are based"? I bet he is. The  current regime was set up after he had  conducted the inquiry into the death of Victoria Climbie - the results of which were published in February 2003.

On his recommendation the Government established the Every Child Matters programme (where even the language is of the old East Germany; how many think that Not Every Child Matters?). It was aimed at creating "a better framework" to improve the lives of children. There was a raft of legislation and the creation of a database called ContactPoint which will hold information on all children in England and Wales, which manages to combine being both useless and sinister at the same time. Finally there was the creation of children's commissioners in the four constituent parts of the UK to co-ordinate efforts to improve the protection of children. They seem to spend a lot of money doing not a great deal apart from issuing pious pronouncements.

So, the Laming regime of child protection is set up and when it fails its first major public test, as it has over Baby P, he is summoned to give us the benefit of his wisdom once again and declares himself happy with the progress of his own recommended reforms despite another death in the same borough, Haringey, which had prompted his original inquiry.

Would it not have been more sensible to ask another person to investigate the Laming regime, rather than Laming himself? This could even, maybe, have been not a social worker but a public servant with experience of another area of government or public policy.

This business is all so very New Labour: the system was the right one, a process was followed, whoops it hasn't worked, call back the man who designed the system for another go, order up another report, act surprised if it happens again.

How very dispiriting and disturbing when there is so much at stake.
